With the summer holidays here, you don’t need telling that the roads are getting busier. Anyone who’s been out on the M25, M1 or even the A-roads lately will have already felt it, more cars, caravans, more delays, and a lot more stop-start driving.
For HGV drivers especially, this time of year can make journeys a bit more unpredictable. What should be a steady run can quickly turn into sitting in traffic, watching the clock, and constantly adjusting your plans.
The weather can’t make up its mind
And then there’s the weather. One minute you’re driving in heavy rain, the next it’s bright sunshine and glare off the windscreen. We saw exactly that last month, with a wet start to June, followed by much brighter spells soon after. It keeps everyone on their toes, especially on longer runs where conditions can change several times in a shift!
A bit of preparation goes a long way
Most drivers already do this without thinking, but it’s worth saying, a bit of prep before you set off can take the edge off a long day. Checking your route, allowing extra time, and just being realistic about delays can make a big difference when the roads are like this.
It’s not just holiday traffic
It’s easy to forget that it’s not just people heading off on holiday either. The roads are still full of HGVs and vans keeping supermarkets stocked, deliveries moving, and businesses running as usual. Everyone’s sharing the same space, just with different pressures.
A few simple things that help
The basics that drivers already tend to do:
1. Leave a bit earlier if you can
2. Keep some water and snacks in the cab or car
3. A small first aid kit is always handy
4. Take breaks when you need them, not just when you “should”
Final thought
It’s just one of those times of year when a bit more patience and awareness go a long way. If everyone gives a bit more room and plans where possible, it makes life easier for all of us out there trying to get the job done.
